Special Portal for Special People

Beschrijving

The "Special Portal for Special People" project aimed to create an environment for mentally disabled people where they can communicate with their friends, their parents, and their caretakers. Microsoft also contributed to this project, acknowledging the value of such a portal for these people. The main technology used is Microsoft based and includes: Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007, Microsoft Live Communication Server 2005, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, and ActiveX.

With this portal we achieved putting everyday tools, which most people take for granted, in the hands of users which have mental difficulties, using complex technology in a simple way. It offers tools like email, chat, video chat, and video messaging within a browser by using Microsoft Live Communication Server 2005.

The website presents the same streamed line interface to all users: patients, family, and caretakers. Being part of a SharePoint portal this means that for some users it represents the main point of interaction, while for others it is a part of a dashboard.

The user interface offers a short, restricted step-by-step wizard like interaction. For those who don't have the ability to read, a recorded sound tells the user what a specific button will do.  One of the main requirements was that the application needs to be fast and flawless, since the users have limited attention span and cannot act upon error messages as regular applications expect from a user.

The biggest challenge was to create a web interface for Live Communication Server. This interface had to enable users to make use of both text and video chat. Live Communication Server 2005 delivers instant messaging and presence as part of a scalable, enterprise-grade solution offering enhanced security, and an extensible, industry-standard development platform. Also, implementing text chat and video chat within a web browser displayed on a web site that is hosted on SharePoint has been one of the more challenging parts of the project. A major achievement is the ActiveX control implemented in C++ to connect to LCS and is hosted entirely in a web part component.

At this moment "Special Portal for Special People" contains the only other known implementation (besides by Microsoft) of a web client for LCS 2005.
